Mitochondria
MOTS-c
Also known as: Mitochondrial Open Reading Frame of the Twelve S rRNA type-c
A 16-amino-acid peptide encoded in the mitochondrial 12S rRNA gene. MOTS-c is a prototype of the mitochondrial-derived peptides and central to longevity and metabolism research.
Structure
- Sequence
- Met-Arg-Trp-Gln-Glu-Met-Gly-Tyr-Ile-Phe-Tyr-Pro-Arg-Lys-Leu-Arg
- Molecular formula
- C₁₀₁H₁₅₂N₂₈O₂₂S₂
- Molecular weight
- 2,174.67 Da
- Amino acids

Mechanism of action
Under cellular stress, MOTS-c moves from the mitochondria into the nucleus and regulates stress-adaptive genes. In animal models it activates AMPK, improves insulin sensitivity and promotes fatty acid oxidation.
