Semax
Also known as: ACTH (4-7)-PGP, Heptapeptid
A synthetic heptapeptide based on a fragment of adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH). Semax was developed in Russia, where it is approved for cognitive and neurological indications.
Structure
- Sequence
- Met-Glu-His-Phe-Pro-Gly-Pro
- Molecular formula
- C₃₇H₅₁N₉O₁₀S
- Molecular weight
- 813.9 Da
- Amino acids
- 7
Mechanism of action
In animal studies Semax increases the expression of BDNF and its receptor TrkB and modulates monoamine neurotransmission. The Pro-Gly-Pro sequence protects it from rapid breakdown.
